ICARUS Deep Mining Drill Calculator

A Biofuel Deep-Mining Drill mines Iron Ore every 30 s (120 per hour) and burns 4.8 L/h of biofuel, so one Biofuel Can lasts 2h 5m. The Electric Deep-Mining Drill is ≈ 179.1 per hour on 2 kW of power. The Oil Deep-Mining Drill's speed is computed in-game.

The Ice Borer mines at the biofuel drill's rate (no speed bonus in the data) on the same fuel. In-game description: “A biofuel-powered drill capable of extracting Super-Cooled Ice or Frozen Wood from Arctic areas.”

Drills compared

Speed stat, fuel or power, and how long each container runs one drill.

Fuel or storage first?

A fuelled drill stops when its fuel runs out or its inventory is full, whichever comes first. One Biofuel Can runs a biofuel drill for 2h 5m; on Iron Ore (30 s per ore, stacks of 50) that is 250 ore, or 5 full slots. With fewer free slots the drill fills before the can is empty.

Faster ores fill more slots per can (stacks of 100 halve the slots for the same ore count). The game data has no slot count for drills, so enter your drill's free slots in the calculator for an exact answer. Electric drills have no fuel to run out: they stop only when full or when the grid fails.

How we compute this

  1. Seconds per ore

seconds per ore = MiningTimeSeconds × drill time factor × (1 − your area bonus)
MiningTimeSeconds comes from each deposit in the game data and is the biofuel drill's time (Iron Ore 30 s, as on the wiki). The electric drill's factor (0.67) is an estimate cited from the wiki's per-ore table. The oil drill's factor is computed in-game. The area bonus is only applied when you enter one.
  2. Ore per hour and drills for a target

ore per hour = 3600 ÷ seconds per ore; drills = ⌈target ÷ ore per hour per drill⌉
Drill counts round up, ignoring float noise (216.0002 drills → 216).
  3. Fuel per hour and runtime per container

    mL/s = GenerationRate ÷ GenerationRatio; runtime = container mL ÷ mL/s
    Both numbers are in the drill's D_Generator row (1 ÷ 0.75 = 4.8 L/h). Container sizes come from D_Fillable (Biofuel Can 10 L).
  4. What runs out first

storage fill time = free slots × ore stack size × seconds per ore
The ore's stack size is in the data; the drill's slot count is not, so you enter your free slots. Without them, the calculator gives the break-even: the slots one fuel load fills.
